Quartz or rock crystal is a mineral widely distributed on the Earth's surface. It represents 12% of the mass of the lithosphere. It is found in quantity in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

The name phantom quartz indicates the presence of hexagonal and prismatic crystals. Collectors are more likely to look for crystals in groups and without gangue. As a reminder, a gangue refers to all the rocks and minerals without economic value that surround gems in deposits.

In lithotherapy, isolated crystals are used for care and crystals in clusters or druses are used to recharge other minerals.

When quartz is called phantom quartz, it is because of a stop in its growth. This stop can be due to a drop in pressure or temperature. During this time, the quartz does not grow. Various materials or even other minerals can be deposited on it and remain trapped in the quartz.

Due to its extremely slow growth, phantom quartz has a higher purchase price than other varieties of quartz such as milky quartz, hematoid quartz, etc. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. Which is a relatively high hardness. For comparison, diamond has the maximum hardness of 10 on this same scale.

The etymology of the name quartz has two hypotheses. Either the name quartz comes from the name “quaterz” meaning bad ores until the 16th century or the other hypothesis would be the contraction of the German name “gewärz” designating an outgrowth.

In the Middle Ages, the name quartz was applied to all crystals. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555), a famous scholar considered the specialist in mineralogy and metallurgy, restricted this term to rock crystals.

There are no myths or legends about phantom quartz, as it was identified very recently.
