Serpentine is not a mineral species but a family of minerals in the silicate group, subgroup of phyllosilicates. This family contains more than 20 members or polymorphs and is found in metamorphic rocks rich in hydroxides of iron, aluminum, manganese, nickel, zinc, calcium and/or magnesium. Their olive coloring and soft, scaly appearance are the origin of the name of their original rocks, ophidian rocks coming from the Greek ophidis, serpent, and its mineral form, serpentine, which comes from the Latin serpentinus, meaning stone snake.
