Sunset rhyolite pebble from Indonesia, approximately 28-35mm.
Colors and patterns vary from stone to stone.

Java sunset rhyolite resembles a sunset in the sea.
It was discovered in an old gold mine in the Banten forest in the west of the island of Java.
The mine has since been closed, but the rough banded stones are still extracted manually and laboriously in the region.
The different colored bands are caused by silicate deposits with different iron content.
