Lizardite belongs to the serpentine family: This group includes, among others, antigorite, chrysotile and lizardite.
The name serpentine is only recognized by the IMA (International Mineralogical Association) as a group of minerals and not a mineral in its own right.
The name of this group comes from the Latin “serpentinus” in reference to the color of the skin of this animal.
Lizardite is named after its discovery in southern Britain on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall.
The main deposit of lizardite is found in metamorphic rocks. It is extracted in Norway.
