Serpentine is not a mineral species but a family of minerals from the silicate group, phyllosilicate subgroup. This family contains more than 20 members or polymorphs and is found in metamorphic rocks rich in hydroxides of iron, aluminum, manganese, nickel, zinc, calcium and/or magnesium. Their olive coloration and their supple, scaly appearance are the origin of the name of their parent rocks, ophidian rocks coming from the Greek ophidis, snake, and its mineral form serpentine which comes from the Latin serpentinus meaning stone snake.
