Officially discovered in 1974 by Dominican geologist Miguel Méndez, who named it by combining his daughter Larissa's name with the Spanish word "mar" (sea). Mining remains artisanal, in mines on the mountainside, which adds to its precious and authentic character.

With a hardness of 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale, it requires a little attention to shocks and scratches.
