Thulite is a rare semi-precious stone, belonging to the pyroxenoid family, more precisely a pink variety of zoisite .


Origin of the name

  • The name " Thulite " comes from the legendary island of Thule , which the ancient Greeks located in northern Europe (sometimes associated with Norway).

  • It was first discovered in Norway in the 19th century.

  • Chemical formula : Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)(Si₂O₇)O(OH)

  • Color : Pink to rose-red (due to the presence of manganese )

  • Hardness : 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale

  • Crystal system : Orthorhombic

  • Transparency : Translucent to opaque

Thulite was discovered at a place called Sauland of Telemark, Norway in 1820. Named after the mythical island of Thule in the belief that the island is Norway. Its pink color contains manganese, sometimes with gray or white.
